Measuring a mechanism

A mechanism is comprised of the metal base and loops that hold the contents into a binder.

Mechanisms come in many different styles and sizes.

You can have round rings, D rings (most popular choice), square rings and mechanisms with lever arch (lever to open the rings for when you insert documents) and a compression bar (holds down your documents so stay in place). Once you have decided on the style of mechanism and this can depend on the capacity of paper you want the binder to hold, you need to decide if you want a 2 ring, 3 ring, 4 ring, 6 ring mechanism and so on. These all vary in price.

Our standard mechanisms are made from nickel plated steel but can be re-plated or coated in a variety of finishes and colours to match your binder.

If you need any assistance then please feel free to call for some advice.

To find out what capacity (mm) your mechanism is you need to look at the mechanism end on (cross section) and measure from the inside edge of the mechanism across the middle to the inside edge of the other side, you measure the part that will hold the contents. See diagram below.

Measure a round ringMeasuring a D ringWhen measuring a round ring mechanism you need to measure from the inside edge of one side the inside edge of the other. This measurement is the capacity that the ring can hold.

When measuring a D ring you measure from the inner edge of the base to the top of the D. Again this gives you the capacity for this mechanism.
